Susan Wang, I have been in the restaurant business for 17 years. The most challenging period
I’ve faced was during the pandemic. In July 2019, I purchased a storefront between Taraval
Street and 19th Avenue in the Sunset District to start my Guilin rice noodle shop, now named
“Guilin Rice Noodles House.” Business boomed after our mid-November opening, but we were
hit by the pandemic within 3 months afterward. Business was tough, and we even experienced
break-ins, food theft, and cash stolen from customers. In desperation, I confided in a friend who
owns a business in Chinatown; she was already a member of the Chinatown Merchants United
Association of San Francisco and shared how the association had been instrumental in helping
the Chinese community with various issues. She spoke highly of the association’s supportive
leadership. Upon hearing this, I asked my friend to introduce me to the association president,
hoping for their assistance. Thanks to President Ed Siu’s guidance, we were able to officially
establish the Sunset District Branch in September 2023. Since the branch’s founding, we have
successfully resolved long-standing issues for local businesses, such as road closures and
indefinite construction delays, and even secured compensations. Additionally, the association
has assisted several merchants with practical problems. The association not only unites the
Chinese community but also serves as a strong support system. I hope more members of the
Chinese community will join this family!
